THE BONOBO PROJECT:
A Concise Biography

The Bonobo Project plays smart, fast and loud hardcore-influenced heavy metal. Inspired by the sexual libertarianism and near-utopian social structure of the bonobo (pan paniscus, humanity’s closest evolutionary relative), the Bonobo Project forgoes most of the trite brutality and psuedo-violence of the metal genre in favor of energy, rhythmic provocation and gleeful mayhem.

Formed in Portland, OR as an instrumental act in late 1999 by Scott Jones (guitar) and Steve Seal (drums), the band now features Ben Lund (bass, ex-Emergency!) and C.J. Szczech (vocals). Two of the members grew up in guns-and-Bibles small towns, while the other two hail from progressive university areas. Two are ex-punks, the other two ex-hippies. This tends to keep things in balance.

Ben is an inveterate Portland man-about-rock, operating InstaFame Studios and playing in Peter Pants and Scuffle & Dustcough. Steve has a straight job and Scott has a girlfriend. They ride around together in Steve’s truck geeking out to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. C.J. is a theatrical lesbian-wannabe who embarrasses his bandmates by dressing like a 14 year-old girl.

The Bonobo Project’s innovative and aggressive arrangements draw kudos from other musicians, while their enthusiasm, melody and unique stage presence inspire screamin’ and hollerin’ in even the most radio-brainwashed rock neophytes. Their music evokes bloody sunsets, romantic car chases, poetic stampedes, and the desperate hope that rock music might still be alive after all.

A Bonobo Project show draws a diverse and kinetic crowd of discriminating, attractive, generally hard-drinking rockers and poseurs. You’ll likely see dyke truckers, unemployed longshoremen, smarty-pants college kids, hip-hoppers, repressed activists, bi-curious skinheads, sweater-clad hipsters and lecherous middle-aged social workers all awkwardly head-nodding and fist-pumping in sexually charged rock and roll unity.

The Bonobo Project has played with acts including Last of the Juanitas, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Swarming Hordes, Oxes and The Rye Coalition. Their debut CD was released by Global Seepej Records in June 2004.
